Last-minute shopping
Get the yard items picked up & brought in now. Get your shutters, plywood, or whatever your door & window covering is, ready to install. If you have a boat start getting it ready to weather a storm. It is a good idea to go over your emergency plans with the family and contact your "out of town" contact person to be on the alert should conditions deteriorate.
If you have not yet stocked up on non-perishable goods and other staple items, buy them now. In addition, pick up some of these foods to supplement basic supplies:
- Apples, lemons, bananas, oranges. All will keep several days at room
temperature.
- Individual servings of pudding, applesauce and diced fruit
- Individually packaged juices and drinks
- Raisins, dried fruits, & nuts, preferably unsalted
- Cheese spreads and cheese slices that don't need refrigeration
- Gum, hard candy - (for stress reduction)
- Ready-made baby formula, not the powder or concentrate
- Baby food in jars
- Cookies, Crackers and chips
- Small boxes of dry cereal & single serving size canned milk.
- Bread, muffins, bagels
- Summer sausage, pepperoni, jerky,
- Condiments, including ketchup, mustard, onions, garlic, oil and vinegar. Virtually any condiment can spice up canned vegetables. Get several small, preferably single serving size, containers rather than one large container, this saves you from having to refrigerate opened containers.
- Bottled water, unless you have plenty, (3 gallons per person per day). We recommend keeping a 3 week supply on hand. Do not count on municipal water systems or on wells. Municipal water supplies can become contaminated through broken lines. Private wells get contaminated through the flooding and storm surge in coastal areas, even if you have a generator to power it with while the electrical service is out.
- Fill an Ice Chest with ice, block ice if available. The larger the block or cube of ice is, the longer it will last.
