Looters and price gougers can take advantage of the chaos in
the days after a hurricane. Stores loaded with merchandise are looters' primary
targets, police say. But after the stores have been picked over or are secured
by authorities, looters commonly turn to the wreckage of homes. Protect yourself
and your property with these tips:
- Police say that spray-painted messages such as "You loot, I
shoot," were a deterrent after Hurricane Andrew.
- Stay outside, especially at night. Criminals usually won't go inside a
home that has someone stationed outside.
- If possible, keep your home well-lighted at night.
- Get a dog or put up signs to make looters think you have a dog.
- Lock your house if you can, especially if you aren't staying there at
night.
