In most cases, you can still use your toilet after a storm. However, experts say you don't have to flush each time the toilet is used. Frequent flushing can overload already weakened electrical systems that power municipal and regional sewer systems.
Remember the old rhyme used by various states during times of drought: "If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down.''
- If no water flows into the bowl after flushing, you can still make the
toilet flush by pouring about a gallon of water into the tank or bowl.
- If the toilet overflows, don't flush again until repairs can be made.
Instead, experts advise that you get old-fashioned: Use a bucket. After
the bucket is filled, it can be dumped in a portable toilet -- usually at
nearby shopping center parking lots.
- Never use the outdoors as a toilet. Even latrines are not advised. Health
experts say that wastes left outside, even in treated latrines, contain
bacteria that can taint water supplies and pose health risks if stepped on
or touched.
