Storing
Your Important
Documents
There are many documents you will need to have in your
possession when leaving or returning. But there are equally as many that you may
not think of or may not even know you will need. FEMA and your Insurance Company
will require specific documents to process your claim, in the event of damage or
loss, you will want to have these on hand.
Long before a storm threatens, collect all your important
documents and records. Put the papers and items into a waterproof container, then
keep the container in a safe place, perhaps a safety deposit box.
- Birth certificates.
- Insurance policies -- homeowners, flood, life, medical, auto, boat, plane
and any other documents that outline property insurance coverage.
- Identification -- including driver licenses, passports, visas, Social
Security or voter registration cards -- for all members of the family. If
your neighborhood is damaged, you might need such identification to gain
access to your own property.
- Any current bills, and at least one each of previous month's electric bill, water bill, telephone bill, gas bill, etc. In the event of catastrophic damage you will need these forms of verification for FEMA Assistance.
- Backup disks or tapes of valuable computer information.
- Irreplaceable photographs, videotapes, family heirlooms.
- If you keep valuable papers and items in a safe-deposit box at a bank, make sure you have copies and a list of items kept there.
